A Beautiful Change of Season for the City

I had the opportunity to attend the Midtown Detroit Inc. 2015 Community Development Briefing. While it’s not news that the neighborhood formerly known as the Cass Corridor has undergone an incredible transformation in recent years, it was exciting to see exactly how much has changed, and how much is still happening in Midtown. I like to think that the explosion of activity in Midtown is a harbinger of good things to come for the city of Detroit as a whole, and proof that we’re ready for more.

For example: Did you know that Midtown’s residential occupancy rate is 97%?  That there are currently almost 500 new residential units under construction, with almost 2,000 more in the pipeline? Or that 112 new businesses have opened up or signed leases in Midtown since 2013? From the new Jolly Pumpkin brewpub to the now opened Carhartt retail store (the first of its kind) to the just-announced Third Man Records outpost, there’s a lot to be excited about.

What I find most promising is that the renaissance of Midtown is no longer an isolated thing. Other neighborhoods are also experiencing exponential growth and high occupancy rates — like Corktown and Downtown. But what is truly encouraging is how this growth is spreading to other areas that haven’t been a part of such intense buzz: New Center, Brush Park, Woodbridge, West Village. As someone who has been helping people find their perfect Detroit homes for years, I’ve always known that the city is more than DownMidCork, that there are great neighborhoods across Detroit. I am so glad that  the rest of the world is starting to see that potential too.
